Abstract

25,394. Royce, F. H., and Rolls-Royce, Ltd. Nov. 6. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, comprises a ' main ' train b, c<1>, d for getting a speed reduced from the highest or solid drive, and an ' accelerating ' train a, e', f, which is used along with the main train to get an intermediate speed. A separate train s, t<1>, r is used for reversing. The sun gears a, b are secured to a driving-shaft x. The annulus f is adapted to be connected to the shaft x by a clutch m or to be held by a brake h. Planet elements e' are carried by a disk e, which is connected rigidly to the annulus d. Planet elements c' are carried by a disk c secured to a loose sleeve c<3>. The central gear s and planet gears t<1> of the reversing-train slide together on a feather on the sleeve c<3>, the gears t<1> remaining in mesh with the annulus r, which is fast on a driven shaft z. For all the forward speeds, a clutch v connects the gear s to the shaft z. The lowest speed is obtained by the main train only when the annulus d is held by a brake h. When the brake h is released and the brake k applied, the annulus d moves forward slowly, and the speed of the disk c and shaft z is raised. On releasing the brake k and engaging the clutch m, the gearing turns solid. For reversing, the carrier t of the gears t' is held stationary by suitable means w, w<1>, the gear s and carrier t being moved for the purpose. The torque in the clutch m is less than the torque in the engine shaft.
