3370. Duckworth, J. J., and Great Holme Mill Co. Feb. 10. Selvedge shedding - mechanism.-To produce rep and like borders in a satin, twill, or other cloth without using a dobby, the healds 6, 7 for the border threads of any material or colour are shed by means of a cam N on a shaft M parallel to and driven at one-fifth the speed of the loom shaft J, so as to make one revolution every ten picks. The healds 6, 7 are situated in front of the ordinary healds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and are connected together by webbing A passing over shafts B, B<1>, so that the healds 6 are raised when the healds 7 are lowered and vice versa. The cam N actuates a treadle E connected to a thin rod F, which passes up through the centre of the warp and is connected by a band or cord G to a spring-controlled thin rod D, the cord &c. G passing round a pulley H on the shaft B. The border threads used are thus kept up or down for five picks and down or up for another five picks; the mechanism may, however, be arranged to cause a change of shed after any other number of picks. According to the Provisional Specification, the movement of the healds 6, 7 may be positively effected in either direction by using two tappets.
