Shedding-motions; healds.-The warp threads are divided, some 11<b>, 10<b> being passed through the eyes of additional healds 15, 18 whilst the others 11<a>, 10<a> are passed through the eyes of ordinary healds 14, 17 and are shed in the usual manner. After a pick, the healds 15, 18 which are made in sections 15a, 15b, 18a, 18b are shed so that the warp threads 11<b>, 10<b> are raised and lowered respectively gradually and progressively in the wake of the shuttle as shown by Figs. 3<a>, 4<a> and 5<a>, so that the weft is caused to assume a sinuous form before it is beaten up, and the warp threads are properly covered. Levers 26, 27, 32, which are operated in succession by grooved cams, are connected directly to the additional healds by cords 28, 29, 33 and are connected also to the healds by cords 19, 20, 30 passing over pulleys whereby the warps are raised and lowered in succession as illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4. The grooved cams are mounted on a shaft driven by chain gearing from a shaft geared to the main shaft. The healds 15, 18 are prevented from swinging by being connected below by guide-ropes passing over pulleys. The apparatus may be used for weaving the backing of carpets &c.
