Abstract

9537. Folberth, W. April 23. Variable-speed and reversing gearing; clutches.- Relates to an epicyclic three-speed and reversing gear suitable for motor-cars. The driving-shaft 1 carries a sun-pinion 2 in mesh with one part 3 of a double planet-pinion 3, 5. The part 3 is in mesh also with a toothed annulus 4, which is secured to a casing 12 and the outer member of a cone clutch 16. The part 5 meshes with a pinion 6 rigidly connected to the outer member of a clutch 14. The inner members of the clutches 14, 16 rotate together on the driven shaft 22, and may be caused to slide separately by rings 19, 21. For the solid drive, both clutches are engaged. For the second speed, the annulus 4 is held by a brake 28 and the clutch 16 is disengaged; the drive takes place through the pinion 6 and the clutch 14. To produce the low speed, the brake 28 is released and a brake 10 is applied to a drum 9 connected to the planet carrier, the clutches being unaltered. To reverse, the clutch 14 is disengaged and the clutch 16 engaged, the brakes being unaltered.
