Abstract

3033. Loeser, F., and Bayley, A. L. Feb. 7. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to change-speed epicyclic gearing, for use on motorcars, tram-cars, &c., of the type described in Specification No. 24,099, A.D. 1903, that is, in which the planet-carrier drives and variable speed is imparted to a driven sun element by braking other sun elements. The present arrangement comprises an extra a countershaft and an extra driven sun-pinion for reversing, and rotatable casing. The countershaft 15 for the direct speeds is carried by a disk 4 secured to the driving-shaft B, and is supported at its ends by disks 2, 3 connected to the disk 4 by bolts 7 and by cylindrical members 5, 6 of the casing. A pinion 28 on the shaft 15 drives a sun-pinion 29 loose on the driven shaft C, and the motion of the shaft 15 is controlled by planet-pinions 27, 40 meshing with sun elements 26, 39, which are connected to brake-drums 20, 21 outside the casing. For the forward speeds, which are a solid drive through a clutch 44 &c. and two lower speeds obtained by braking the drums 20, 21, respectively, the pinion 29 is connected to the shaft C by a double clutch 32 sliding on a feather &c. on the shaft C and operated through a collar 38 outside the casing. The countershaft 11 for reversal carries a pinion 43 driving a sun-pinion 35 loose on the shaft C and clutchable thereto by the double clutch 32. The shaft 11 is controlled by one or more planet-pinions, such as 42, of suitable dimensions meshing with sun-pinions, such as 41, which may be held against rotation by brake drums, such as 22.
