Abstract

20,861. Normanville, E. J. de, Lee, H. J., and Preen, A. Sept. 28. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing for motor vehicles &c. Upon a driving-shaft b, Fig. 1, is secured a sun-wheel a in mesh, through half of their length, with primary planet-wheels c, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted upon pins d between carrier discs e, e<1>. The disc e<1> is secured to the driven shaft h, and the disc e to a sleeve f loose on the shaft b and carrying a brake wheel p and sun-wheel g. Secondary planet - wheels mounted upon pins d<1> and carried by the discs e, e<1> are in mesh with the other halves of the wheels c and, in addition, with the wheel g. Internally -toothed wheels i, l are separately supported upon the discs e, e<1>, respectively, and upon a disc e<2> mounted upon the pins d and provided with apertures for the pinions j. The former is in mesh with the pinions c, and the latter with the pinions j in the planes of the wheels a, g, respectively. For the high forward speed, any suitable clutch k on the shaft h is caused to grip a projection i<1> upon the wheel when the gear rotates as a whole. For the intermediate forward speed, the clutch k is withdrawn, and a brake o applied to the wheel p to lock the wheel g. For the low forward speed, the wheel g is released, and a brake m is applied to the wheel i. On releasing the wheel i, and applying a brake n to the wheel b, the reverse motion is obtained. A two-speed gear is also described. According to the Provisional Specification, the arrangement for operating the clutch may be mounted on an extension of the driving-shaft, to do away with thrust between the shafts.
