Abstract

1534279 Sheathed cable BICC Ltd 13 Feb 1976 [13 Feb 1975] 6220/75 Heading H1A An electric cable comprises a core 5 which may consist of insulated conductors or flexible wave or light guides, loosely contained within a plastics sheath 6 extruded over a non-metallic liner 7, formed from sheet material having a layer 8 on the outer face which may form a bond with sheath 6. A substantial gap exists between the core and the liner so that the core will not be damaged by an external impact deforming the sheath. In an apparatus for manufacturing the cable, Fig. 2, the core 5 is fed through a tube 14, the liner being fed from spool 16 and formed around the tube 14 by dies 17, and the seam sealed by hot air blower 19 before the sheath 6 is applied by extruder 11. Tube 14 extends into the cooling bath 12 and serves to protect the core during the sheathing operations. Dimensions of an embodiment are given. The sheath may be of P.V.C. or polythene and the liner of plastics-coated paper.
