Abstract

863,436. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1959 [Aug. 15, 1958], No. 26293/58. Class 36. A coaxial submarine cable has a core of stranded metal wires, e.g. mild steel, 1, with a copper tape 2 folded longitudinally therearound, the box seam 3 being hermetically sealed by a filament of plastic material such as polythene or lead. A polythene filament 4 may be led under the copper tape through a guide tube 5 just before the folded edges of the tape are brought together. The core may then be heated to cause the filament to seal the seam and a thermoplastic insulating covering is then extruded over the core.
