Abstract

1387095 Filled cable GENERAL CABLE CORP 30 April 1973 20422/73 Heading H1A Polyethylene insulation of conductors 10a is partially cross-linked to prevent contact with the filling compound (58, Fig. 3, not shown), from rendering it liable to cracking when conductor ends are terminated. The compound (58) fills all the spaces inside an electrostatic shield 42. The cross-linking is produced by 5-15 megarads of electron beam irradiation after the insulation is extruded at 12 but before the conductors 10a are coated with compound at 22. The compound is preferably a petrolatum/ polyethylene mixture. The conductors 10a are compressed by a die 20 and held together by tapes 28 to form the cable core and then more compound is applied. Then a die 40 forms a lap seam (44) in a 200Ám thick corrugated Al tape 34 to produce the electrostatic shield 42. The tape 34 has an anti-corrosion plastics coating on both sides. Finally a plastics jacket 50 is extruded, the heat of extrusion melting the plastics coating on the tape 34 to stick the edges together at the seam (44).
