Abstract

A vapour-proof sheath for a cable 38 is provided by folding longitudinally around insulated cores 60 a plastics tape 10 containing a metal foil 12 and fusing the overlapping edges of the tape by heat to form a tabless seam. The whole is directly enclosed in an extruded jacket 70 of a different plastics material, which is prevented by a release agent 66 from bonding to the sheath. A heat shield 58 of paper may be provided between the sheath and the cores. The foil thickness is about 1 mil, with several times this thickness of plastics on each side, and further laminations of higher fusion temperature plastics may be added.
