Abstract

The thin outer conductor ribbon 28 (e.g. copper or aluminium) of an air dielectric coaxial cable is laminated with a metal (e.g. steel) ribbon 22 by an adhesive 26 and longitudinally wrapped and soldered as at 38 along the overlapping longitudinal seam to form a strong tube around central conductor 10. Insulating discs 12 are longitudinally spaced inside the corrugated (18), Fig. 2, not shown) tube 14 to support the central conductor. The steel ribbon may be tin plated 24 and the adhesive may be a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid with attached carboxyl groups. The steel ribbon may be wider than, or of the same width as the ribbon of copper or aluminium. The coaxial cables 6 may form the cores of a multicore cable (2) (Fig. 1, not shown) having a polythene-lead sheath (4) and polythene outer jacket (8). A method of making cable 6 is illustrated (Fig. 7, not shown) in which three spools (48), (52), (50) supply the materials for the laminate to an alignment device (54), heater (56) and rollers (58), (60) while a spool (44) supplies the conductor to disc applicator (46). The laminate and conductor come together in former (62) being pulled through the various stages by a capstan (40), Specification 1,168,478, is referred to.
