Abstract

1500613 Solar heaters; liquid heating apparatus ENERGY CONSULTANTS Ltd 13 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 1974] 1375/75 Headings F4U and F4A Liquid, e.g. water for a domestic hot supply, is heated by a source of heat which is only occasionally available, e.g. a wet back boiler or by solar energy in a radiant energy collector 1 and passed by a pipe 5 to a storage cylinder 4 from which it is forced out to a header tank 3 by the pressure of incoming mains water passing to the collector through a line 8 having a valve 2 responsive to the temperature of the liquid within the collector. The header tank comprises a first ball-cock 7 connected to the mains supply 6 to retain a lower, minimum level therein, and a second ball-cock 11 to maintain an upper level in the tank, the ball-cock 11 being in the junction between the mains supply 6 and pipe 8 to override the valve 2. The collector comprises a planar array of metal pipes formed in sinuous pattern which may be secured to one or between two blackened metal plates, or within grooves formed within the plates. An electric immersion heater is positioned in the cylinder 4 and a flow restrictor valve 15 is placed in the pipe 5 between the collector and cylinder.
