Abstract

1441866 Vehicle rear-view mirrors W ZIPPERLE 25 Oct 1974 [14 Dec 1973] 46229/74 Heading. B7J An exterior rear-view mirror for a motor vehicle comprises a plastics housing 1, a frame 5 heat-sealingly joined to the housing, a glass mirror pane 6 having its reflective face in direct abutment with a peripheral face 2 of the housing, and a seal 7, e.g. of rubber, held against the front face of the pane 6 by a flange of the frame 5. The flange of the frame may have an endless channel which locates the seal 7, as shown, and the face 2 may have a groove 3 which receives a tongue 4 on the frame. A hollow foot 9, for mounting the mirror on a vehicle, may be pivotably connected to the housing by means of a hollow hemi-spherical cap 10 on the housing which is received in a corresponding socket in the foot. The cap 10 has a screw-threaded cylindrical extension 12 which is passed into the housing 1 and receives a nut 13 bearing on the inside of the housing through a sealing washer 14 to urge a collar 11 on the cap against the exterior of the housing. A bolt 17 passes through a spring packet 16 and a pressure transmitting member 15 within the cap 10 and into the interior of the foot 9 where it is secured by nuts 21. The foot 9 has a removable cover 23 for access to the nuts and an elastic plug 25 is provided to seal the extension 12.
