Abstract
1432973 Knitting machine; yarns SMITHFIELD FIBERS INC 3 April 1973 15920/73 Headings D1C, D1K and D1W Yarn is knitted from two separate strands 24, 26 by forming one or two series of stitches successive stitches of the or each series being formed alternately from each strand. The yarn is preferably knitted on a machine with two simultaneously vertically reciprocable latch needles 32, 34 each forming a stitch respectively from one of the strands at one reciprocation and from the other at the next reciprocation. Guides 162, 168 on bars 28, 30 deliver yarn to latch needles 32, 34 which slide in a block 38. As shown, in knitting two yarns, units 120, 122 supply strands to service bars 28, 30; 124, 126. Cams 136, 134 are carried on a cam shaft 106 and respectively through linkages cause horizontal reciprocation and oscillation of throw bars 158, 164 which carry service bars 124, 28; 126, 30. Cams 144, 146 reciprocate the needles 32, 34 through levers 152, 154 with arms 220, 222 which, with offset arms 225 support bushings engaging the lower ends of needles 32, 34. To knit the yarn of Fig. 5 with closed loops cam 136 is moved to a shaft 142 which rotates at twice the rate of shaft 106. The strands may be twisted, braided or knitted as described.
