Abstract
526,661. Knitting. SCHNEIDER, M. E., (trading as SCHNEIDER & REUTHNER). March 24, 1939, Nos. 9300 and 9301. Convention dates, March 24, 1938, and Dec. 17, 1938. [Class 74 (ii) ] Relates to the production of a twisted-loop purl fabric on a knitting machine with two opposed sets of needles, each of which needles carries a knitting yarn and is so curved that the yarn hangs clear on one side of the needle. The two sets are disposed at an angle which, preferably, is less than 15 degrees. The needles can be shogged, for knitting purposes, and can also be moved in vertical planes at right angles to the length of the machine. In Fig. 1 the needles 5 are shown in their uppermost position, at which stage loops 9 hang on the stems 10 and encircle loops 11. formed from yarns 1. The sides 15 of the loops 11 are hanging freely below the bent needle heads 5<SP>1</SP>. At this stage, the needles 6 have just cast off loops such as 12 and have been shogged to the amount of one needle pitch. Towards the end of the shogging movement, each needle 6 engages the side 15 of the appropriate loop 11, as a result of which the loops 11 are held by the needles 6 and new loops are formed from the yarns 2. The needles 5 are then retracted to form loops and so on. To facilitate casting-off, the needles during retraction may be slightly tilted. The loops of the fabric produced as above described extend horizontally. Selvages are produced by means of a plunger 18, Fig. 4, which moves thread 14. up to needle 6<SP>11</SP> disposed adjacent the outside needle 6<SP>1</SP> so that it is knitted together with the thread passing through 6". Patterns incorporating stitch transfer effects are produced by means of combs &c. By forming two or more thread openings in each needle, the production of reinforced fabrics or patterns with longitudinal stripes is rendered possible. The needles can be moved individually and consecutively to perform the knitting operation.
