Abstract

1415659 Liquid heaters PLESSEY CO Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9693/72 Headings F4A and F4S A liquid heater comprises two chambers 54, 56 separated by a gas-permeable plate 58, a liquid jacket 76 surrounding both chambers, a heat exchange bed 60; either a fluid bed as shown or solid, e.g. metal particles bonded together, a fan 66 to pass a gas/air mixture into the lower chamber, and an igniter 74; the gases passing after ignition through the plate 58 and through the bed and the second chamber. In the embodiment shown auxiliary water tubes 82 are buried in the fluid bed and an air/gas mixture is introduced by fan 66 and ignited by device 74. The plate 58 is formed from metal, e.g. mild steel, from ceramic materials, or from a metal sponge, mesh or screen, and to retain the particles of a fluid bed the plate is covered with a metal sponge, gauze, mesh or screen. The particulate material forming the fluid bed can be sand, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, or loose metallic particles and a particle retaining screen 86 is provided above the bed, although this may be replaced by a cyclone separator. The lower portion of the heater is provided with a radiant firebrick base 84 which, when hot, assists in heating gases in the lower chamber.
