Abstract

1394316 Tool steel CRUCIBLE Inc 16 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48164/73 Heading C7A A tool steel which posesses improved wear resistance and toughness consists by weight of:- 1.5 to 1.6% carbon 3.5 to 4.5% chromium 2.5 to 3.5% vanadium 9 to 11% tungsten 4.5 to 5.5% molybdenum 8.0 to 12.5% cobalt up to 1% manganese up to 1% silicon 0.02 to 0.08% nitrogen the balance being iron and impurities, e.g. sulphur and phosphorus. The pre-alloy powder is heated to over 2000‹F, and compacted at over 1900‹F to at least 95% theoretical density and forged. The resulting article is austenitized or around 2170‹F, oil or salt bath quenched to 1100‹F, air-cooled, and then precipitation hardened at e.g. 1025‹F.
