Abstract

1376810 Railway vehicle couplers AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc 24 Nov 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 54436/72 Heading B7T The knuckle 14 of a modified A.A.R. type "E" railway vehicle coupler is extended forward at its forward face 16 by 5/36 in. compared with a standard type "E" coupler and has in horizontal section a first portion 20 making an angle A in the range of 77‹ 17<SP>1</SP> to 80‹471 with the coupler centre line CL, the optimum angle being 79<SP>0</SP>35<SP>1</SP>, a second portion 22 making an angle B in the range of 87<SP>0</SP>47<SP>1</SP> to 88<SP>0</SP>47<SP>1</SP> with the centre line and a third portion 24 making an angle in the opposite direction with the centre line. The front face of the knuckle has in vertical section at each end a first tapered portion 30 making an angle of 4<SP>0</SP>43<SP>1</SP> with a central section 28 and curved portions 32 and 34 of relatively large and small radii of curvature. The pulling face of the knuckle has a first portion 40 making an angle of 4<SP>0</SP>43<SP>1</SP> with central section 38 and a greater tapered portion 42 merging with a curved portion 43.
