Abstract

1481088 Railway vehicle couplers MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 8 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 43549/74 Heading B7T A railway vehicle is provided with a coupler 10, Fig. 6, pivotally connected to a yoke 42 by a pin 76 and having a butt end surface 48 formed by a flat portion 94 and tangentially joining convex side portions 96, the arrangement being such that in any angular displacement of the coupler about the pin 76 corresponding to a displacement of the coupling centre point of the coupler up to at least 9À2 cm. or 3# in., a buffing force F<SP>1</SP> is directed, through the position of contact between the coupler butt end surface and the flat end face 50 of a follower 30, along a buffing force line f<SP>1</SP> which intersects the vehicle longitudinal centre line rearwardly of the vertical pivot axis T of an adjacent wheeled bogie of the vehicle. The arrangement according to the invention is said to reduce the magnitude of transverse derailing forces caused by buffing forces. The pin 76 is a loose fit in the receiving hole of the coupler 10. The butt end surface of the coupler may have the dimensions shown in Fig. 4.
