Abstract

1373792 Ultrafiltration of electro-deposition composition PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 11 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52326/71 Heading C7B [Also in Division B 1] A method of treating an aqueous electrodeposition composition containing a film forming resin vehicle comprises subjecting the composition to a selective separation process which retains the vehicle and passes the aqueous effluent through a physical barrier. The separation process may be ultrafiltration or reverse osmosis. The vehicle may be an ionically solubilized synthetic resin such as a polycarboxylic acid solubilized with an amine or an alkali metal hydroxide. Alternatively it may be a polybasic resin solubilized with an acid. The ultrafiltration membrane may comprise a layer of homogeneous polymer supported on a thicker layer of microporous open-celled sponge, the pore size of which may increase from one face to the other. The membrane may be thermoplastic polymers such as polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polysulfones, poly (methyl methacrylate), polycarbonates, poly (n-butyl methacrylate) or a co-polymer of any of these. The membrane may be supported on a sheet of paper. The homogeneous layer is 0À1-10À0 microns thick and the sponge is 20À0 microns to 1 millimetre thick. The filter may pass molecules less than M.W. 500. The ultrafiltration may be conducted as a concentration process or a diafiltration process.
