Claims (12)

43201/2 it I claim: \
1. A method for preparation of a reverse osmosis membrane comprising crosslinking a film of polyethylenimine by reaction with a polyfunctional crosslinking reagent whose functional groups are capable of reacting with amine groups in the polyethylenimine, said reagent being one or more compounds selected from the group comprising tolylene 2 , 4-diisocyanate , cyanuric chloride, tereph- thaloyl chloride, diphenyl ether disulfonyl chloride, isophthaloyl dichloride, trimellitic anhydride acid chloride and metabenzene disulfonyl chloride.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the film of polyethylenimine is prepared from a solution of the polyethylenimine in water and wherein the crosslinking reagent is present in a solvent solution.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein the concentration of the polyethylenimine in the aqueous solution is from 0.033 to 2.7 wt . percent.
4. The method of claim 2 wherein the concentration of the polyethylenimine in the aqueous solution is from 0.33 to 1.0 wt . percent.
5. The method of any one of claims 2 to 4 wherein the concentration of the crosslinking reagent in the solvent is from 0.1 to 5.0 wt. percent.
6. The method of claim 1 in which the functional groups of 43201/2
7. . The method of claim 1 in which the membrane is prepared in situ on a support material by forming a layer of polyethylenimine on the support, followed by reaction with the crosslinking reagent.
8. . The method of claim 7 in which the support is a microporous polymeric film.
9. . The method of claim 8 in which the support is a polysulfone film.
10. .· A method for preparation of a reverse osmosis membrane substantially as hereinbefore described.
11. . A reverse osmosis membrane prepared by the method of any one of claims 1 to 1C.
12. In a process for desalination of saline water by reverse osmosis comprising contacting the saline water under pressure with a reverse osmosis membrane, the improvement comprising using the membrane of claim .11 as the reverse osmosis membrane. For the Applt jrrtfj^v
