Abstract

Effluents from plant for painting by electrophoretic deposition are reconcentrated by reverse osmosis at a semipermeable membrane. In examples paint solutions containing 6 and 10% non-volatile solids are used, the membranes being copper ferrocyanide deposited in porous porcelain pot, a tubular cellulose acetate membrane 0.005 in. thick supported on a glass fibre porous tube, and a 0.015 in. thick biaxially oriented polystyrene sheet supported on sintered steel. Specified pressures are 38, 200, and 300 psig respectively. Effluents arise during rinsing of painted articles which results in a diluted paint solution, and the process of the invention enables the paint to be reused. Suitable membranes are permeable to water only and not to the other components of the solution.
