Abstract
1348602 Boring earth &c MOBIL OIL CORP 11 April 1972 [16 June 1971] 16645/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division G1] A logging while-drilling well-tool 46 comprises a housing 46a, a motor 55 having a drive shaft 55a rotated at a speed determined by a condition measured by the tool, gearing 59 connecting the drive shaft to a rotary valve 56 generating pulses in the drilling fluid, a clutch 58 between the motor and the gearing, and a flexible coupling 60 between the gearing and the valve, the frequency of the pulses being indicative of the magnitude of the condition. The tool is housed in a drill collar 26 through which the fluid flows downwardly. The gearing is a two stage planatary gear reducer. The tool has a turbine 52 rotated by the fluid and driving a generator 50 applying electricity to the motor. A device 53 connected to strain gauges 54 subjected to the load on the drill bit controls the motor so that the speed of the motor is dependent on the load on the bit. The rotor 56a and the stator 56c of the valve have radial slots at their peripheries, the valve generating pulses the frequency of which varies according to the speed of the motor and the bit weight.
