Abstract

1404620 Boring earth MOBIL OIL CORP 29 Nov 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 55134/72 Heading E1F [Also in Divisions G3 and H3] Apparatus and method for transmitting down-hole measured valves to the surface of the earth in well-logging procedure comprises utilising a flowing drilling liquid and an accoustic generator which when driven at a constant speed produces a continuous accoustic wave signal in the liquid of constant phase and of a frequency proportional to the movement of the member wherein the speed of the member is momentarily changed in response to the output of a measuring transducer and is then re-established to a preceeding constant value to change the phase of the accoustic signal from one state to another. The phase changes constitute a non-return-to-zero binary code and are converted into corresponding electrical signals from which is recovered a binary coded value of the down-hole condition, see Division (H3). Located in the drilling string near to the bit is a logging tool 36 having inner-and outer housings 42, 44 between which, at 45, the drilling fluid passes. An accoustic transmitter 54 comprises a slotted stator and a rotor 54a with complementary slots. Another motor 56 and gear 57 drive the rotor 54a which imparts the required accoustic wave to the liquid. Section 48 contains all electronic components associated with the logging- tool and is separated from other parts of the device by bulk-heads 62, 63 through which various wires pass. A generator 68 is also provided to generate power for the motor 56.
