Abstract
1330680 Releasable fastenings OSAKA TRUNK MATERIAL CO Ltd 23 Oct 1970 [18 July 1970] 50427/70 Heading E2A A suitcase fastening comprises a portion 4 for attaching to the lid of a suitcase and a portion 21 for attaching to the base of a suitcase. The portion 4 has a depending plate 11 which, when received in an aperture 40 formed in a surface 45 of the portion 21, aligns the portions 4 and 21. The portion 4 is provided with a hook keeper 17, Fig. 4, and the portion 21 is provided with a latch bolt 24, the hook keeper 17 being urged away from the latch bolt 24 by means of a spring 19 and the latch bolt 24 being urged by means of a spring 26 so that, when the hook keeper 17 has been forced to the position shown in Fig. 4 against the action of the spring 19, the latch bolt 24 is urged by the spring 16 into engagement with the hook keeper 17. The depending plate 11 has projections 10, 10' and 10", Fig. 5 for guiding the hook keeper through an aperture 47, Fig. 3, in the portion 21. The latch bolt 24 is releasable by means of a member 35, Fig. 5, which is slidable in a channel 34, Fig. 8d, in the portion 23. The member 35 has hooks 33, 33', Fig. 5, which pass through slits 55, 55' respectively in the latch bolt 24 and has a locking mechanism having a key hole, Fig. 6b and comprising a key core 30, a cam 31 and a spring 32. In operation when the hook keeper 17 is being forced into the position shown in Fig. 4, the latch bolt 24 is moved to the right against the action of the spring 26 and when the hook keeper is in the position shown in Fig. 4, the spring 26 has returned the latch bolt to effect fastening of the portions 4 and 21. Unfastening is effected by pushing the member 35 into the position shown in Fig. 5 where the latch bolt 24 has been moved against the action of the spring 26. The member 35 has an aperture 44, Fig. 8c, formed in a rear plate 42 thereof to allow freedom of movement of the hooks 33, 33' which couple the latch bolt 24 to the member 35 and to facilitate the insertion of a key. The release of the hook keeper from the latch bolt causes the hook keeper to be moved by the spring 19, the impact tending to cause separation of the portions 4 and 21. The portions 4 and 21 may be die-cast from aluminium alloy or from zinc alloy. The member 35 may be locked by means of a key (not shown) which rotates a cam 31, Fig. 6b against the action of a spring 32.
