Abstract

Fastening mechanism for a hinged part of a vehicle comprises headed striker 9 which co-operates with a manually operated retaining member 15, and a cam 35 acting on the striker and serving in use to apply to the hinged part, when this is in its closed position, a force urging it positively into engagement with a fixed part of the vehicle to hold the hinged part tightly closed and prevent rattle. In the embodiment shown the striker 9 comprises a rod 10, slidable in a housing 11 mounted on the lower. rear edge 7 of a hinged cab, and having at its lower end a conical head 12 for engagement in a keyhole slot 14 in a plate 15 slidably mounted on a fixed part of the vehicle. To secure the cab in closed position the plate 15 is operated by a rod or cable 29 to place the wider end of the slot 14 below the head of the striker which then enters the slot. The plate then returns to its original position under the action of a spring 28. A lever 36 pivoted to the upper end of the rod 10 is then swung in the opposite direction to the arrow to the position shown, so that bifurcated cam 35 thereon urges a boss 30 resting on the housing 11 downwards and exerts an upward, force on the striker so that the housing 11 is urged tightly against buffers 21 on the vehicle chassis. Lugs 37 between the narrower and wider parts of the keyhole slot 14 prevent sliding of the plate 15 until pressure on the striker is released by actuating the lever 36 to allow the striker to move downwardly under the action of a spring 38. Accidental release of the cab is prevented by a spring-loaded pivoted hook 42 mounted on the fixed part of the vehicle and engaging in an opening 46 in the housing 11. The hook is released by a flange 47 on the plate 15 when this is moved by the rod or cable 29. Alternatively the hook 42 is manually operated.
