Abstract
1,014,067. Hasp locks. C. W. CHENEY & SON Ltd. Oct. 16, 1964 [Oct. 18, 1963], No. 41155/63. Heading E2A. A key operated lock for articles of luggage comprises a casing containing a linearly slidable bolt 14 which is spring urged for engagement with a hasp part, a locking plate 23 provided with pivot means 24, an aperture 27 and a key engaging projection 29 the latter projecting into the aperture from a part of the margin thereof most remote from the pivot means. In the construction shown the casing comprises front and back plates 5, 6 the front plate 5 having a skirt 8 and four tabs 7 which extend from the skirt and are bent over the back plate 6 to secure the two plates together. The bolt is a pressing in the form of a shallow tray and it has a catch portion 16 which projects partly across a hole 10 in the front plate so that the catch portion 16 can engage a loop 11 of the hasp 12. An end portion 17 of the bolt protrudes from an aperture 9 in the front plate to enable the bolt to be moved by hand against the bias of the spring 18. The pivot means of the locking plate is a hole 24 which is engageable with a part 25 plunged from the back plate 6 and the movement of the locking plate is limited by lugs 26 struck up from the back plate. The locking plate is retained in its locking and unlocking positions by a tail 22 of the spring 18 which is engageable with one or other of two concave recesses 31, 32. In the locking position an edge 33 of the locking plate engages a lug 20 of the bolt to prevent movement of the bolt. The key passes through a pressing 34 which is mounted in an aperture 28 of the front plate and its bit is engageable with the projections 29 to move the locking plate between its two positions. In the construction shown the bolt is moved to releasing position by pressing the portion 17 towards the hasp but in a modification the bolt is moved to releasing position by movement in a direction away from the hasp. This is achieved essentially by rotating the casing and its contents through 180 degrees relative to the hasp and providing a hole in the hasp through which the key can engage the bolt and an additional manipulating member at the bottom end of the bolt which is arranged to protrude from the casing.
