Abstract

1296201 Stabilizers for bows and other weapons K ASKHAM 6 Feb 1970 40260/68 Heading A6S [Also in Division F2] A stabilizer for an archery bow, in one preferred form, comprises a main tube 1 having external threads 2 and 3 at either end. Thread 2 is screwed into the tapped recess 5 of an adaptor 4 having another smaller tapped recess 6 opposite recess 5, for receiving a threaded insert 7. A rod 8, axially slidable in tube 1, has an external thread 9 at the end farthest from adaptor 4, which is received in a threaded recess 10 of an open container 11 which contains a plastics material capsule 12, 3/4 filled with mercury. The open end of container 11 has an internal thread 13 which receives a threaded tapered cap 14. Co-axial with rod 8 is a two-part torque clamp 15 having an internal thread 16 which is screwed onto external thread 3 of the tube 1. Torque clamp 15 has an axial bore opening into an internal conical cavity 17 which is occupied by a snug-fitting collet 18 which is coaxial with the rod 8 and the torque clamp 15. Collet 18 has a single radial cut along its length (not shown). The two part construction of torque clamp 15 enables the collet 18 to be inserted, before the two parts are cemented together. The whole assembly is attached to an archery bow by screwing insert 7 into a recess in the bow. In operation, shock waves produced in the bow frame, by the vibrating string after release of the arrow, are absorbed by the mercury. Good balance is obtained by adjusting the length of the attachment with slidable rod 8, which is tightened when torque clamp 15 is tightened against split collet 18. Fig. 2 describes another form of the device in which the container contains oil and a ball bearing restrained in the middle of the container, between two springs.
