Abstract

1428653 Fracture fixing device NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8350/72 Heading A5R A fracture fixing device comprises an elongated intramedullary member 1 and a separable cap 3 recessed to receive one end of said member and adapted for securement to bone. As shown in Fig. 1, the member comprises a cylindrical rod 1 with an enlarged head 2 having a rounded end which is inserted along the medullary canal of a bone through an incision made in one end. The rod is then cut off level with the incision. The cap comprises an externally-threaded sleeve 4 of which the internal diameter is a sliding fit on the rod I and the outer diameter, apart from the thread, is not greater than that of the head 2. The cap is closed by a head of larger diameter than the sleeve. To secure the fracture, the bone incision is tapped to receive the cap which is then screwed in so that the rod I is received within the sleeve 4. When the fracture has united, the device can be removed. In a modification (Fig. 3 not shown), a major portion of the rod is of the same diameter as the head 2 in Fig. 1, but the other end is of reduced diameter for insertion into the sleeve 4.
