Abstract

[Also in Division H4] A depth setting mechanism for a sonobuoy comprises: a cap 17 having a male drive element 22; a cone-shaped collet 27 having a threaded bore and split along its axis into two parts, the collet having a groove for engagement with the element 22; a hollow cylinder 33 having a conical inner surface matching the cone-shaped collet 27 for mounting the collet; a spring 36 urging the cylinder and collet axially apart; a screw-threaded member 25 passing through the cap 17 and engaging with the collet 27. The lower end of the collet 27 engages with a slot in a depth setting mechanism 44 so that rotation of the cap 17 is transmitted via the collet to the mechanism 44. On impact with the water, the lower part of the casing falls away to allow mechanism 44 to fall to its predetermined depth, together with the hydrophones. Movement of mechanism 44 allows spring 36 to force the cylinder 33 and collet 27 apart, thus releasing screw 25 and allowing the spring loaded aerial 42 to eject cap 17.
