Abstract

To damp vibration in a hand-held hitting means, such as a tennis racquet, a bat, a club, or a hammer, at least one cavity is provided in the means, partly filled with a dense liquid such as mercury. This may be in the form of a self-contained capsule in the handle, shaft or neck of the means, and the capsule may be adjustably positioned. <IMAGE>

Description

VIBRATIONAL DAMPENER Technical field This invention relates to simple dampener for reducing vibration in hand-held objects used for striking or hitting (such as racquets, clubs, hammers and bats).
Background Tennis elbow and other physiological problems brought about by repeated vibration when hitting a ball or other object with a striking object such as a hammer or racquet, could be reduced by improved dampening. The use of rubbers, sponges etc is commonplace, but the problem could be more efficiently tacked with a fluid-filled vibrations absorption pod.
Essential technical features Dampening of vibrational energy in hand-held objection (such as racquets, clubs, hammers and bats) by the use of a fluid-filled cavity with space for movement located in the grip or internally elsewhere in the striking object as a means of energy absorption. The most likely fluid would be mercury, but other high density liquids and/or fluids could be used. High density refers to a specific gravity of at least 1.5, preferably at least 2, and more preferably at least 3. the position of the vibration "pod" in the handle, shaft or grip is adjustable.
Example Figure 1/ shows tennis racquet just after impact, showing vibrational waves travelling throught the frame and being absorded by the mercury (or other fluid) in the vibration pod.
Figure 2/ shows the adjustable vibration pod apparatus where the positioning of the mercury (fluid) pod can be altered to personal preference by inserting different vibrational pod screws, giving location and different quantities of mercury (fluid).
Figure 3/ shows an alternative positioning of vibro pod within racquet.
la on diagrams refers to fluid filled vibro pod. The diagrams show racquet and parts in cross section.

Claims (3)

1 The use of a partially filled cavity containing mercury and/or other high density fluid within the object used for hitting, for energy absorption purposes - namely the reduction of vibration.
2 The adjustability of the positioning of the vibration pod to suit personal preference by means of a screw device.
3 The fluid container could be made out of various substances such as other metals, plastics, ceramics, rubber or rubber substitutes or any other material used for the purpose of holding the fluid.
