Abstract

1,225,832. Vacuum switches; spark gaps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 25 April, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 19713/68. Headings H1D and H1N. A vacuum switch 40 or triggerable vacuum gap device 10, 80, eliminates anode spots by a configuration and positioning of the arc electrodes such that essentially no magnetic field exists within the interelectrode gap 26, 56, 97 or 98, the outer electrode 16, 42, 87 encompassing the inner electrode 17, 43, 81, which has a reentrant structure. The outer electrode 87 also has a re-entrant structure (see also Figs. 8-10, not shown), giving two inter-electrode gaps 97, 98, in this case. In the switch 40, a starter electrode 52 has a reciprocating contact-piece 54 establishing contact between arc electrodes 42, 43, the contact-piece being suitably shaped to fit the configuration of cylindrical member 45 of electrode 43 or being flat if a flat plate electrode is utilized in an alternative embodiment. The gap device 10 has a trigger device 23, comprising a second hydride film on a ceramic cylinder, and is connected in series or parallel with a load, the device 10 also being an alternative trigger device 27. Gap device 80 has trigger devices 100, 101, and (optionally) 102, 103, and is convertible to a vacuum switch by replacing these with reciprocable starter electrodes. The arc electrodes have circular symmetry as shown, or an elongated semi-cylindrical, partial-parallel configuration with rounded ends and planar centre portions, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), or a rectangular cross-section, Fig. 5 (not shown), or an elliptical cross-section, Fig. 6 (not shown), or provide flat plate electrode symmetry, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown).
