In an electrical connector comprising a socket part R and a plug part P, means are provided to make and break contact by sliding axial movement, whilst the casings of the plug and socket parts are in axial alignment and end-toend abutment, having previously been engaged by a relative transverse movement. The connector halves may each comprise a tubular casing, 10 and 40, in which is a contact-carrying insulating insert 18 and 44, said insert being held in a tubular sleeve 15 in the case of the plug P. The socket part R includes a pin contact 45, and the plug part P a complementary socket contact 20. At the mating end of casing 10 are two arcuate projections 12, with a complementary pair 46 on the casing 40. Pins 7 and 49 and complementary holes 8 and 48 on these projections hold the mating halves in non-rotatable abutment. When in this position, the sleeve 14 and insert 18 assembly of the plug may be moved into the socket by means of the lever 21 and links 23 and associated members. Spring- loaded plunger members 27 in recesses 28 and 29 in the sleeve 14 determine the operative and inoperative positions of the slidable assembly, the members 27 extending through a passage 32 in the easing 10 to locate the sleeve 14 in the casing 10. Movement may be initiated by depression of the push-button 33. Rotation of the sleeve assembly inside the casing may be prevented by a co-operating key and keyway, at 17 in the plug, and at 43 in the socket. The outer end 36 of the sleeve 14 may be used as a coupling means for a cable shielding conduit. Resilient rings 52 and 53 may be provided in annular grooves in members 10 and 40 to seal the junction of the mating units. Other modifications are disclosed in which the pin-andsocket contacts may be interchanged; in which there are both pins and sockets in one insert; and in which two plug units P may be coupled.
