Abstract

990,802. Two part couplings. HOLLANDSCHE DRAAD-EN KABELFABRIEK N.V. June 13, 1962 [June 13, 1961], No. 22764/62. Heading H2E. In a plug-and-socket connector for use in explosive atmospheres means are provided for locking the connector parts against axial separation with the contacts sufficiently spaced apart to prevent arcing between them so that in the event of an explosion within the connector the connector parts are not blown completely apart and the hot gases are forced to follow a tortuous path to the outside and are thereby cooled before escaping. In the embodiment co-operating plug and socket sleeves 1 and 9c are formed respectively with complementary stepped projections and recesses 13 and 14 (Fig. 5) formed to ensure correct coupling and permitting locking of the connector parts at various stages of axial separation. Each of the sleeves 1 and 9c contains contact carrying resilient blocks which deform on full connection of the connector parts to form a moisture seal and the sleeve 1 of the plug part and the sleeve 9b rotatably connected to sleeve 9c of the socket part are each formed with a flange which coacts with complementary coned ferrules 5 to wedge the cable braid 6 therebetween. The rotatable connection between sleeves 9b and 9c may include a co-operating pin and slot (Fig. 3, not shown) with the slot length chosen to control the required rotation of the sleeve 9c relative to the body of the socket part.
