Abstract

1,243,701. Spray producers. D. B. ERICSON. 24 June, 1969 [1 July, 1968; 11 June, 1969], No. 31738/69. Heading B2F. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for atomizing liquids, including slurries and suspensions, and for making snow by atomization of water includes a rotatable hub 12, Fig. 1, driven by an electric motor 18, fan blades 14 and openings 28 arranged in such a fashion as to produce a flowing film of liquid from the openings over both surfaces of the fan blades, when the blades are rotating, with a significant component of flow of the film towards the trailing edges of the fan blades to provide atomization off the trailing edges. Back flow of air from the blades 14a, Fig. 4, may be countered by the inclusion of a second set of blades 14b shorter than and axially displaced from the blades 14a. The inboard section of the leading edges of the longer blades, see 114a on Fig. 8, may be brought down to the same axial location as the corresponding edges of the shorter blades 114b at the place where the fluid is applied. Concentric sets of openings 128a and 128b may be used. Alternatively, the liquid may be delivered up through a hollow shaft into the base of a cup-like hub or fed on to the blades by gravity. The device will atomize 15 United States gallons of water per minute by use of a five horsepower motor to rotate the blades at 3500 r.p.m. The resultant water spray provides atomized droplets approximately 500 microns in diameter. Ice-free snow can be produced from eight or nine gallons of water per minute at a temperature of 35‹F, in air at 27‹F and 70% relative humidity.
