Abstract

1,231,564. Tobacco-smoke filters. P. E. BRUDY, O. H. BRUDY and J. E. J. HABOWSKY. 7 Feb., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6623/69. Heading A2C. A filter for cigarettes or cigarette holders comprises an impervious, transverse wall with circularly spaced openings that converge in the direction of smoke flow and are directed towards an axially extending surface, which may be slightly roughened or treated with adhesive, whereon tarry and like matter is deposited. As shown, the transverse wall 15, which may be of aluminium foil of the order of 0.015 inch thick, has openings 16 adjacent the inner surface 17 of a cylinder 14 and directed towards that surface. The openings may be formed by piercing or punching and may be of greater length than the thickness of the transverse wall. The parts 14, 15 may be formed as a single plastics element, e.g. of polyethylene, and the transverse wall may be domed in the direction towards the mouth of the smoker. The direction of the openings may have both circumferential and radial components, and a further modification is described in which the openings are directed towards the surface of a cylindrical or frustoconical plug at the centre of the transverse wall.
