Abstract

1,081,951. Inhaling devices. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. April 29, 1965 [May 11, 1964], No. 19495/64. Heading A5T. An inhaling or smoking device comprises an outer wrapping and an inner tube bounding a space containing tobacco or other material which produces heat when the device is smoked, the said tube containing a source of nicotine vapour, and being made of frangible or friable material or comprising material which becomes frangible or friable under the influence of said heat. Thus, when the device is "smoked", the tube may be knocked away with the ash. The device may be illustrated with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, wherein tobacco occupies the space 1 between the paper wrapper 2 and the inner tube 3, the latter's inner surface being coated with a nicotine source and an aerosol source 4. The tube 4 may be (i) composed of a plurality of segments 10 of ceramic material or metal foil, connected by adhesive 11 (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, polystyrene, starch or cellulose derivative); or (ii) composed of a plurality of segments held together by a sleeve or envelope of paper; or (iii) composed of an inorganic salt which loses water or carbon dioxide and becomes brittle on heating. Apart from tobacco, finely divided catalytic nickel or iron may be used as heating material.
