Abstract

1,218,180. Carbon filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 24 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24605/67. Heading C1A. Filamentary carbon is produced by heating organic filamentary material at 200‹ to 300‹ C. in air, air enriched with oxygen, or nitrogen, wrapping the so-treated filamentary material in a cloth made from carbon filaments or fibres and heating the package so obtained in excess of 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere to carbonize the filamentary material. The organic filamentary material may be made from cellulosic, polyamide or polyester material and preferably comprises filaments consisting of polyacrylonitrile. The cloth may be made from carbon filaments or fibres which are produced from filaments or fibres of cellulosic, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile materials. The package of filamentary material wrapped in carbon cloth may be further heated in excess of 2000‹ preferably 2500‹ C. in an inert atmosphere to effect graphitization. The organic filamentary material preferably has a length of 3 metres.
