Abstract

1,256,072. Carbon filaments. MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 30 Jan., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5353/68. Heading C1A. The properties of carbon filaments (formed by heating filamentary organic material) are improved by a process comprising heating the filaments at a temperature above 900‹ C. in which the filaments are arranged in bundles in which the filaments are substantially aligned with respect to each other, said bundles being in contact with a getter of carbon or a material yielding carbon under the heating conditions, whereby access of active materials in the ambient atmosphere is substantially prevented. The bundles may be wrapped in a carbonizable paper (e.g. kraft paper) prior to the heating whereby the getter is formed in situ, or the getter may be added carbon black, or else provided by the outer filaments in each bundle, the bundles being closely packed during the heating above 900‹ C., e.g. a carbonization at 2600‹ C. in argon. The carbon filaments (as starting materials) may be prepared by the process of 5354/68.
