Abstract

1,215,002. Treating carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 1 Feb., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967; 15 May, 1967; 23 June, 1967], Nos. 5105/67, 22537/67 and 29237/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions B3, C7, F1 and H1] Carbon fibres are produced by carbonization of a filamentary material having a carbon-tocarbon backbone, such as viscose rayon, a polyamide or a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile. First the filamentary material is heated at 200-300‹ C. in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, then at 1000‹ C. or more in an inert atmosphere and finally at a higher temperature in an inert atmosphere to induce graphitization. The carbon fibres produced are oxidized, e.g. in concentrated nitric acid or in an aqueous solution of chromic acid, then are coated with metal to make possible their incorporation in carbon fibre-metal composite materials.
