Abstract
1339744 Carbon fibres COURTAULDS Ltd 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 15134/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division B5] In making carbon fibres tensioned filaments of polyacrylonitrile, i.e. homopolymers and copolymers containing not less than 80% p.a.n., are passed through a first zone at a temperature in the range 160 to 199‹ C., then passed under tension through a second zone at a temperature in the range 200-300‹ C. and then finally carbonized in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1000‹ C. Preferably the p.a.n. fibres are continuous and spend “ to 4¢ hours in the first zone. The first and second heating zones may have an oxidizing atmosphere e.g. air; and the fibres may be subsequently graphitized by heating at a temperature in the range 2000-3000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere.
