Abstract

1,236,021. Carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 2 Oct., 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 30511/67. Heading C1A. Continuous carbon filaments are prepared by feeding pretreated organic filamentary material in coils downwardly through a vertical heating zone, e.g. a tube or tunnel furnace, maintained at a temperature of not less than 1000‹ C., and containing an inert atmosphere. The treated filaments may also be graphitized in the same furnace by means of a further heating zone lower down the length of the furnace maintained at a temperature greater than 2000‹ C. The pretreated organic filamentary material may be cellulosic polyamide or polyester filaments e.g. polyacrylonitrile, or any other filaments the structure of which contains a carbon to carbon backbone. These filaments are pretreated by heating to a temperature of between 200‹ and 300‹ C. in an atmosphere of air or air enriched with oxygen or nitrogen.
