Abstract

1,190,634. Feeding webs. MASCHINENFABRIK VITS G.m.b.H. 22 Aug., 1967 [23 Nov., 1966], No. 38652/67. Heading B8R. An air bearing support for a web comprises a slit nozzle extending transversely of the web and arranged to direct air at an angle towards and along the web, and a convex perforated air guiding surface downstream of the nozzle. In Fig. 1, an arrangement includes two such supports comprising a pair of opposed nozzles defined by a pair of plates 3 and a concave plate 2. The plates 3 extend beyond the mouth of the nozzles to form the convex air guiding surfaces perforated at 3a. Concave plate 2 is also perforated at 2a. Fig. 1 illustrates drying apparatus which includes nozzles 4 and 5. The air bearing support arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1 may be used for changing the direction of movement of a web (Fig. 6), and also for the climatic treatment of a web passed through a drier (Fig. 8). A single nozzle and convex guiding surface may be used to stabilize a paper web running through a printing machine in the region of an optical sensing device (9, Figs. 4 and 5) for automatic register control.
