Abstract

1,269,826. Feeding webs. EGAN MACHINERY CO. 24 June, 1969 [29 July, 1968], No. 31913/69. Heading B8R. [Also in Division F4] In its travel from dispensing apparatus 10 to reeling apparatus 11 a web W is supported by a flotation system including nozzles 50 connected to a blower 51; gas, e.g. air, issuing from each nozzle coacts with the web W and with curved exit surfaces of the nozzle to form a flow pattern producing a region of low pressure whereby the web remains stable a short distance from the support nozzle. A suitable form of nozzle, which utilizes both the Venturi and Coanda effects to achieve the desired flow pattern, is described with reference to Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown). As shown, the web W is supported by the nozzles 50 within, but out of contact with, a dryer 12 furnished with upper drying means 32 and lower drying means 34 connected to blowers (37), (41), Fig. 2 (not shown), the air discharged by the nozzles 50 and the means 32, 34 being withdrawn by an exhaust blower 46. The dryer may be of the arch type, where the web passes through in a bowed configuration, and the nozzles 50 may be located above or below the web (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), or on both sides of the web. In another embodiment the flotation system is used to support the web in its passage from coating apparatus to a laminating unit (Fig. 8, not shown).
