996,290. Textile treating apparatus. MASCHINENFABRIK VITS G.m.b.H. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 1, 1960], No. 35269/61. Heading D1L. [Also in Division F4] In apparatus for treating fabric, plastics or paper webs, the web 1, Fig. 4, passes through a drying space 3 in a floating condition achieved by treatment air 10, Fig. 1, emerging in the form of hollow jets 11, 12 from upper and lower nozzle boxes 6 positioned in parallel transverse to the direction of movement 2 of the web, the shape of the jets being determined by baffles 13 supported by plates 14 located in slots 9 of each nozzle box 6. Each hollow jet confines a space 15 tapering in the direction of the web, which space gradually builds up a static excess pressure to provide a supporting cushion for the web due to the deflection of marginal portions 16, 17 of the jet. Opposed hollow jets are in staggered arrangement either singly or in groups which provide a slightly undulating movement to the web in the direction 2. In a modification, Fig. 6, (not shown), the undulating movement is avoided by the centre planes of the nozzle boxes 6 being perpendicular to the plane of the web but the side walls of opposed upper and lower boxes forming the nozzle stols are inclined away from the centre plane in alternate directions. In a further modification, Fig. 7, (not shown), the web is stretched in a direction perpendicular to the path of travel by hollow air jets from upper and lower nozzle boxes being directed outwards so as to hit the centre plane of the web at an acute angle. Various forms of nozzle boxes are described to achieve the hollow air jets.
