Abstract

1,160,886. Automatic level control. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. Sept.8, 1966 [Sept.21, 1965], No.40233/66. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically maintaining a desired level of molten metal in a continuous casting mould, deviations of level control, proportionally, the speed of pinch rolls withdrawing the casting and, if this speed deviates from a preselected value by more than a predetermined extent, the speed deviations control, proportionally, the rate of pouring of metal into the mould. As described, means detecting the level of molten metal in a continuous casting mould normally automatically control the speed of pinch rolls withdrawing the casting from the mould, but if this speed, as determined by a tachometer generator, varies by more than a predetermined extent from a preselected speed determined by the setting of a manually operated potentiometer, a difference voltage renders one or other of two biased diodes conductive, according to the sense of variation, so that the difference voltage is effective to control a hydraulic system adjusting the stopper of a ladle from which molten metal is poured into the mould. Both control systems, which are similar to systems described in Specification 1, 092, 153, then co-operate to maintain a desired level in the mould. A switch is provided to permit changeover of control of the rate of pour from the difference voltage to a level deviation signal.
