Abstract

1,186,395. Continuous casting. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 6 April, 1967 [7 April, 1966], No. 15866/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division G3] To maintain the melt level in a continuous casting mould 19, the flow rate of molten metal into the mould, from a controllable outlet 13 from a transporter ladle 11 or furnace by way of a tundish 16, ladle or other intermediate vessel, is regulated automatically (e.g. by a control amplifier 27) according to electrical signals, from both a melt level indicator (e.g. a gamma-ray system 20-22) at the mould and an indicator 18 at the tundish &c. vessel responding to the melt level or to the weight of the vessel and its contents. The teeming outlet 13 may be controlled by a stopper rod or by a stop-valve 14 operated through an hydraulic or electric motor 15. The outlet 17 from the tundish 16 may have similar obturating means but manually-operated. The indicator 18 may indicate weight electrically, electronically or mechanically and include a magnetostrictive emitter or it may indicate the melt level by means of a thermoelectric element or photo-cell. The level in the copper mould 19 may be indicated by temperatureresponsive elements or thermoelectric probes (29) instead of the gamma-ray system 20-22.
