Abstract
1,094,501. Automatic level control. KREIDLER'S METALL-UND DRAHTWERKE G.m.b.H. April 5, 1965 [April 7, 1964], No.14258/65. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically controlling a continuous casting process, the angle of the pouring furnace is changed intermittently and the ratio of the period during which it is changing to the adjacent period in which the angle remains constant is varied in dependence on the level of the poured metal. As described, the level in the chilled mould is detected by a float moving a mask between a plurality of vertically arranged lightsources and photo-cells responsive to them. As the level rises and each light-source is obscured, a further capacitor is connected in parallel with a capacitor in a transistor multi-vibrator circuit so as to increase its time in one state relative to its time in the other. Since the multi-vibrator is responsible for controlling the on/off ratio of an intermittently operating hydraulic actuator which increases the angle of tilt of a furnace pouring into the mould, the rate of pour is thus decreased as the level rises in the mould. If the level rises to such an extent that the uppermost light-source is obscured, the hydraulic actuator is controlled so that the pouring furnace moves towards an upright position to stop pouring until the level falls. Manual control of the hydraulic actuator is available.
