Abstract

1,144,391. Rolling. E. W. BLISS CO. 7 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 16114/67. Heading B3M. Strip guiding apparatus, for feeding the leading end of a strip 5 between a pair of rolls, and for holding the trailing end under tension, comprises upper and lower platens 10 and 12 carrying strip engaging blocks 67, 80, 66, and 40, 51, 81, 47, and 39 respectively, the outer blocks being adjustable transversely to accommodate different strip widths. The platens are movable by a cylinder 17 towards and away from the associated mill rolls, and the upper platen 10 is additionally able to be raised by cylinders 58 and 59 Carriages 13 and 14, which carry the outer blocks, are mounted on oppositely threaded portions of a screw 18 such that rotation of the screw adjusts the blocks transversely. Each carriage, Fig. 4, supports an edge contacting block 40 and an adjacent lower block 51, the corresponding upper block 67 being operatively connected by a pin 69 for movement with the lower one. A spring 35 acts between a nut 27 on the screw and the carriage 12 to bias the carriage to the left, while hydraulic pistons 92, 93 in the nut urge the carriage, against the spring bias, towards the right. The pistons normally hold the block 40 against the strip edge while allowing quick release of the block by means of the spring.
