Abstract
1,150,084. Bending; stretch forming. REDMAN HEENAN INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 23 May, 1966 [22 Feb., 1965], No. 52085/64. Heading B3E. A forming machine comprising a former, means for maintaining a length of extruded section in contact with the surface of the former and in fixed relation therewith, means for rotating the former, the section remaining in fixed relation therewith during rotation of the former, whereby the section is bent about an axis or axes transverse to its length, i.e. extending widthwise of the section, and means for tilting the former about an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of the former. A length of extruded section 19 to be formed, e.g. into a window section for motor vehicles, is held at one end in a chuck 18 carried by a rotated former 10 and at the other end by a chuck 50 on a slide movable towards the former 10 as it is rotated to wrap the section 19 therearound. The section 19 is subjected to tension during bending by stretching cylinders 51, 17 respectively connected to the chucks 18, 50. Additional, toggle air, clamps 20a, 20b are provided on the former 10. The former 10 is tilted about an axis 70, Fig. 3, perpendicular to its axis of rotation, by an hydraulic cylinder 29 controlled by a stationary cam surface 30 surrounding the former 10, thus allowing window sections having one or more portions not in the general plane of the window to be formed. The chuck 50 is lifted during tilting of the former by means controlled by a valve 94 operated through link means 90, 76 by a cam follower 73 engaging a cam surface 72 on the turret 12 carrying the former 10. On completion of the forming the cylinders 17, 51 are actuated to effect a further stretch to set the bends and reduce spring-back. If desired, a workshoe or roller box 11 may be provided to press the section 19 against the former 10, the shoe 11 being urged by an hydraulic cylinder 14 and not rotating with the former 10. In this case the end of the section 19 may be merely clamped to the former 10. The workshoe 11 includes, Fig. 6, spacer members 46 engaging the sides of the section 19 and adjustable for variations of section width by wedge means 33, 34 actuated by piston cylinder means 35, 36. Rollers 22 on the shoe 11 engage the base of the section.
